RARA-AVIS: Re: Edward Aarons

Sat, 31 Oct 1998 15:29:34 -0500 Duane brings up the subject of Edward S. Aarons. I confess I tried to
read only one of his books and gave up on it a chapter or two in.

I grew up in the Washington, D.C. area. Aarons set his spy novels
here. His descriptions of a Virginia Potomac waterfront were so
unbelievable that they made clear to me that he'd never been to the
area.

I can't read an author who is that sloppy with his locales. It's
like another mystery writer (name mercifully forgotten, but he liked
to mix psychic elements into his mystery plots, which didn't help) who
described "the cliffs of Long Island," clearly unaware that Long
Island is a giant sand bar....

On the other hand, I was a big fan of Donald Hamilton's Matt Helm
books -- and his westerns, as well. The last (most recent) of his
books on my shelf is THE VANISHERS, 1986. Has he had more recent
books?
