Jeff Lander wants a suitable song for a singer in a 1929
speakeasy.
But the kind of torch singer he describes (using something
*like* "I
Got It Bad And That Ain't Good" or "Embraceable You"; a "Keely
Smith
type") is far more typical of the forties than the twenties.
I'd
suggest checking out some Bessie Smith pieces; the most torrid
female
singers of the twenties were black and those who imitated
them.
Sorry you lost that one, Fred, but 'tis better to be a runner
up than
not nominated at all.
