<<There was a piece by JCO in last Saturday's Guardian.
[I don't think
the Guardian weekly and Guardian Internation Edition carry
all the
'filler' stuff that the UK edition has]. It was re-printed
from
Granta--a rather pretentious UK 'literary
magazine'.>>
I remember this Granta article. It's called _After Amnesia_.
It started
out theoretical (reflections on identity and such), but
turned out to be
an interesting description of her reactions to what she saw
inside the
prison.
On the topic of prisons, which hardboiled authors besides
Chester Himes
and E. Richard Johnson were in prison for a long time? In
Johnson's
case, he actually wrote all his novels while in prison. I
don't know
that he ever got out.
