RARA-AVIS: here's some interesting parallels

Thu, 1 Oct 1998 13:21:01 -0400 (EDT) I remember when i first signed on this list a discussion about some modern
hard-boiled isms... or something along those lines... I'm going to stretch
it... I watch sci-fi on TV, but rarely read it but here is two paralells I
found between the hard-boiled detective and sci-fi TV

Blade Runner: The PI of the future... Never read the novel (which I hear
is way different) but the movie has stolen totally from the noir renre and
if you like that try Dark City both excellent movies...

Buffy, the Vampire Slayer: Here is the interesting point... the last
season of this show (especially the last ep) ran along the lines of the
hard-boiled PI... she is one tough cookie... She ends up a loner (like
most PIs)... isn't happy, and has to kill her one love... She's tough and
beats the hell out of anything in her way... not to mention witty... I
noticed this and was just wondering what you think...

Plus, we know Fitzgerald inspire MacDonald (ross), but how about this for
a topic... Was the Great Gatsby actually the first hard-boiled PI book?
I'll bet you can make a case (okay okay I don't know when The Maltese
Falcon cmae out...) but look at it... the narrator (detective?) Nick
Carraway (if that ain't a dick name I don't know what is) investigates
some shadowy figures (Gatsby who has links to the mob) there's a few not
so nice women (I'm drawing a blanks on names... Lucy??) and a few tough
guy Tom.... Plus there is death and destruction... some slick lines ("Life
is best looked upon from a single window" "So we beat on") and once again
the narrator ends up alone and confused...

What do you think?
