<<I've been buying the Merle Constiner westerns because
his characters
are so full of personality and vernacular.>>
Indeed. Unfortunately, Constiner has fallen into a
deep-freeze oblivion.
He did a lot of work for the mystery and adventure pulps;
however, very
few have appeared in mystery anthologies, at least to my
knowledge. We
should probably add Constiner to the long list of "to be
rescued"
authors...
Regarding Williams, I once read that he reused his short
stories as
parts of his many novels, which may be a reason why those
stories
haven't appeared more often. There is a good one in The
Mammoth Book of
Pulp Fiction, which I reviewed in these pages about a year
ago. I
believe this story was later cannibalized into his awesome
novel
_Scorpion Reef_.
