Comic books are certainly pertinent. The Batman series of
comics (so noir!),
for example, does reinvigorate, in a lateral way, the
hardboiled genre, as do,
I believe, many dark animated (mostly Japanese) "cartoons" on
TV. Anyone into
Spawn?
In any event, by stepping gingerly outside the genre we can
often get a better
idea of what it's all about.
