I'm really into Lew Archer right now and am trying to collect
the whole
series. I'm in the middle of the Ivory Grin, and so far have
felt the Chill
and The Far Side of the Dollar, and even the Drowning Pool
are his best so
far. Does anyone have any reccomendations.
I'm trying to teach myself about the genre of the hard-boiled
dick. I feel
that Marlowe is the most hard-boiled of those I have read,
and Chandler's
prose is mesmerizing, and deep.
Along the lines of who and who shouldn't be considered
hard-boiled. Has
anyone thought about Burke's Dave Robicheaux? He and Clete
are amazingly
tough, on themselves. Probably one of the best descriptive
writers around,
Burke's New Orleans sizzles (I sound like a review) and his
characters are
believable tough, unlike Hammet's (this is over the line I
know) overdone Sam
Spade....
Can Spenser be considered hard-boiled? He seems more of a
wise guy than
anything else, his not depressed, and he has too many friends
that stick
around... while the novels are enjoyable, can they be
considered a part of
the genre????
