Kevin Smith is right about the emotional flatness of the
writing. That
was one of the first things that struck me about, and got me
hooked on,
the Brandstetter series. In it, Hanson had such a
distinctive
zero-degree style. I was also struck by the sense of melancholy
that
hangs over the books, especially the first few as Dave adjusts
to the
death of his lover (I am such a sucker for a depressed private
eye).
Also agree that the toxic waste dumping book was one of the
best in the
series. I really enjoyed that series, I may have to go back and
re-read
a few.
