RARA-AVIS: Glad I found the list

Wed, 5 Aug 1998 19:46:32 -0700 Hi Everyone!

I found the list doing a Yahoo search on James Cain -- I'm really excited
by what everyone's talking about and have Haywood's novel on order so I can
take part (as luck would have it I'd put Cain's "Postman" in the order
before even seeing the rest of the reading list. After reading "Double
Indemnity" I just wanted to read more).

My literary travels -- started reading pleasure-fiction after my comic book
habits started to get both exception and less interesting. Also I've
learned to be a better engineer and have discovered free time lately.
That'll probably change.

I've been reading hard boiled detective and crime stuff for about the last
two years, since I picked Ellroy's "Black Dahlia" up off the recommended
table at Cody's in Berkeley. I've been more and more impressed with his
fiction (Haven't picked up Hollywood Nocturnes yet.. takes a lot to make me
buy hardcover fiction), although I wasn't turned on terribly by "My Dark
Places". Other authors I've read lately:

Philip Kerr (Berlin Noir and Philosophical Investigation) -- nice stuff,
wish he'd stop writing Crichton-alikes.
Edward Bunker (Dog eat Dog). The moral universe there really bugged me..
anyone else?
Cain (Double Indemnity)
Williford (Miami Blues) I'd just finished Bunker's book and Junior's
character didn't seem nearly as monstrous.. given how much everyone's
talking about him
Vicki Hendricks (Miami Purity) Another Miami book.. what's with that
place?
Jason Starr (Cold Caller) I really liked this one.. killing for a
telemarketing job..

And some other stuff.. McCary, Connelly..

Right now I'm reading "A Coffin for Dimitrios" by Eric Ambler. Nice spy
novel about 1930's in central Europe.

Back to reading the list..
