Actually, I would define wimping out as rushing to censor
yourself,
either by blacklisting alleged or past or even present
Communists or by
recutting your movies to please an industry board, simply
because a few
government officials threaten they might step in, instead of
standing up
and testing if film has the same first ammendment protections
as the
printed word. Granted, I'm oversimplifying the impact of state
censor
boards, but they weren't placated by the Production Code,
anyway. Many
states imposed further cuts. So not only is self-censorship
wussing
out, it didn't even achieve what it set out to do. And to make
this
whole argument relate to the list, without the code Postman
would have
been made over a decade earlier.
