Stein, who read police procedurals every day (or so she said) and loved
Hammett (made a point of visiting him in one of her only return to trips
to the US), also said this of detective fiction:

"I do like detective fiction. I never try to guess who has done the
crime and if I did I would be sure to guess wrong but I liked somebody
being dead and how it moves along and Dashiell Hammett was all that and
more." (Everybody's Autobiography)

Anybody read Blood on the Dining-Room Floor, Stein's one and only
detective novel?
