Another writer that comes to mind -- not as old as Mencken -- is Nelson
Algren. I've read very little of his work, but I think I recall reading
that he wrote nonfiction pieces as well as novels and stories. Algren wrote
in a hard-boiled style ala Hemingway about the darker sides of the tracks
in his stories. Anybody know anything about his nonfiction? Any
recommendations? -- Duane
