Mon, 29 Jun 1998 16:22:17 -0700 Rara-avians beyond the reach of BBC Radio 4 might want to check out the
World Service part of the web site <http://www.bbc.co.uk>; it may be
that the short Ian Rankin series on the history of crime fiction might
find its way onto the World Service. Maybe if people show interest, it
will?

Anyway, inspird by a follow-up to my initial post, I had a look at the
Beeb's site.
Here's a snippet of what I found:

> R A D I O H I G H L I G H T S
>
> The Doctor, The Detective And Arthur Conan Doyle
> 9.45-10.00am Radio 4
> Michael Williams takes time off from playing the role of Dr Watson in this
> week's Classic Serial - The Hound Of The Baskervilles, to begin a
> five-part reading from Martin Booth's recent biography, The Doctor, The
> Detective And Arthur Conan Doyle.

[SNIP]

> Elementary My Dear Rankin
> 3.30-3.45pm Radio 4
> Ian Rankin, who won the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger award
> for Best Crime Novel of 1997 for Black And Blue, continues this week's
> investigation of the many facets of crime. He puts the fate of the police
> officer in crime fiction history under the magnifying glass in this five-part
> series. Ian begins with the early 19th century and the fictional memoirs
> of the real life French police detective Vidocq. The story moves on to
> characters like Inspector Bucket in Charles Dickens's Bleak House, and
> Sergeant Cuff in Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone. The century closes with
> Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle's consulting detective destroying the
> emerging police officer in fiction.
