Yesterday's Washington Post had a review of two books about
film
noir--_Girl With a Gun_ and _Dark City_. I imagine that the
piece can
be accessed at www.washingtonpost.com The former is more of
a
guide/list of the author's favorite 100 films noir. The
latter more
analytical.
Did anyone follow any of the recommendations in Rafferty's GQ
article?
I read maybe 75 pages of the much praised O'Connell's
_Mallory's
Oracle_. It didn't do a lot for me, but then I had such
high
expectations from the Rafferty piece. I am also just lukewarm
on what I
took to be another latter-day crime classic: Stanley Ellin's
_Dark
Fantastic_. In a weird way, it strikes me as more dated than,
say,
(surprise, surprise) Hammett or Chandler. Maybe I'm just
getting old,
cranky, and jaded.
