Re: RARA-AVIS: criticism

with Hush Money which featured a detective, whose name escapes me at the
moment who is bought off. As a matter of fact, the investigation is
fueled only by the PI's wanting more knowledge so he can get a better
price and sell out to the right person. The story ends when he takes
the money and actually does stop investigating. I didn't read the other
two. Basicaly it was a cute idea, but its realization wasn't that
great. As I recall (it's been a long time since I read it so I may not
remember correctly), there was too much of an attempt to keep the PI
cool and likable.

No such problem with Loren Estleman's great one shot Peeper, here the
title character is exactly that sleazy PI most fiction detectives define
themselves against.
