Mon, 8 Jun 1998 20:09:37 -0400 (EDT) As far as critics of hardboiled movies are concerned, there is also
"Violent Screen" by Stephen Hunter. I recently began to read Hunter,
when he came to the Washington Post. I found him so insightful,
especially when writing extended essays about noir and neo-noir, that I
went out and bought this anthology of his earlier work. I wasn't
disappointed.

I've read one of his novels, "Dirty White Boys," and found it lacking
the depth of his reviews. It was strict genre fare and thrillers are
not my choice for that. (Although, friends who are thriller fans seem
to like him very much.) If I'm going to read an average genre piece,
it's almost always going to be a PI novel. Which, I guess, takes me
back to Streeter.
