Of possible current interest to Rara Avians would be _Sin City_, Frank
Miller's current work. A series of comics set in a fictionalized, noir LA
(or a smiliar city), Sin City follows a few quite hard boiled protagonists
through dealings with the city's tough-as-nails protitutes, corrupt
cardinal (if memory serves) and a variety of other dark denizens.

Graphically, the whole thing is told in stark black-and-white (with a few
occasional uses of a single color). It's gritty, quite violent and (I
think) quite good. Sin City is avaialble in a variety of paperback
compilations and should be carried by any good comics store. It is
published by Dark Horse Comics.

On the topic of comics, another recently published piece of hardboiled
graphic fiction is _Road to Perdition_. Written by Max Allan Collins and
published by DC/Paradox, this paperback graphic novel tells the story of a
mob hitman who takes vengeance on his former bosses when they try to kill
him. Loosely based on actual events, it's a great read.
