RARA-AVIS: Re: Ellroy

Thu, 7 May 1998 07:07:31 -0500 Hmmm....my two cents...just wrapping up Nocturne. Jumpety speed-soaked scat
on violence, corruption and accordions. Overreaching, not quite up to his
novels. Stories like shrapnel from a not quite close enough, sawed-off
shotgun blast, that stick in your skin. Books are better, rhythm gets chance
to establish itself, stretch out, change tempos, extended drum solo, the
beat, the beat, continue shotgun blast riff, books point blank, right in
your face, take your head off.

What was it Chandler said about style? That it was the only thing a writer
should worry about? Ellroy must have been listening...

I'm hoping to pick up L.A. Confidential on video soon, to see how (if) they
can capture Ellroy on film. Evidently, his first book, Brown's Requiem is
also scheduled to go before the cameras, as a low-budget independent
starring Michael Rooker (The Replacement Killers) as Fritz.
