_High Priest_ is great stuff--top-notch Willeford from the
start. It is
his first published novel--1953, I think--and one of three set
in the
San Francisco Bay Area. Its focused plot revolves around
vicious and
witty used-car salesman Russell Haxby's attempt to seduce a
married
woman. Another used-car salesman, Russell's double of sorts,
named
Richard Hudson, appears in _The Woman Chaser_ (1961), which I
consider
Willeford's best novel.
The RE/Search reprint of _High Priest_ has a good introduction
by Lou
Stathis.
