RARA-AVIS: Two points of e-mail etiquette

I would like to remind everyone about two important rules to follow
when taking part in a mailing list:

1. Cut down quoted text as much as possible. This is includes
signatures, the lines added to the bottom of every RARA-AVIS message,
and everything else that is not strictly relevant to your message. It
is wasteful and annoying to include reams of needlessly quoted text in
a message.

2. Format your messages so that they fit the 80-character line.
E-mail messages should be designed so that no line has more than 80
characters - in fact, 72 or so is a good number to try for. It is
especially important that this be checked when pulling in text from
another source, for example a web page, because the formatting there
is usually pretty odd.

If everyone follows these two long-established e-mail guidelines, the
list will function much better.

Thanks,

Bill
