Ellroy's second novel, _Clandestine_, he admits is a fictional
tackling of
his mother's death (an exploitation). The Dahlia case
fascinated him for
the same reason as his mother's, the unsolved, brutal quality.
So, he used
the Dahlia to "cover" his questions about his mom's murder. And
finally,
with _Dark Places_, he goes head on with his mother's unsolved
murder.
