Tue, 17 Mar 1998 14:16:17 -0600 I understand the literal translation of "La Reine des pommes" is 'Queen
of the Apples," the closest French equivalent to 'Five Cornered Square.'
Himes named the original manuscript that because Jackson, the titular
protagonist of that particular book "was so square he had five
corners." The original American title, by Fawcett, was "For Love of
Imabelle." This was a heavily edited and expurgated edition. It was
later released by Avon as "A Rage in Harlem," pretty much as Himes had
written it.

Himes did write them all in English first--he never learned French--and
they were translated by several different French translators. Their
names can all be found in the book by Bob Skinner, CHESTER HIMES: AN
ANNOTATED PRIMARY AND SECONDARY BIBLIOGRAPHY put out in '92, I think,
sadly appears to be out of print.
