Himes's novels were all written in English, but translated into
French
by various translators for Gallimard.
We have all of Himes's first editions in English and French at
the
University of Maryland because he fits into our collection of
works by
expatriot Americans living in Paris, of which he was one of the
last.
At the University of Maryland at least, Himes is part of the
same group
which includes Hemingway, Djuna Barnes, Gertrude Stein, Louis
Paul,
etc. Interesting, non?
