I thought I'd jump in with a short message before I hie
myself off to San
Diego for Left Coast Crime over the weekend. I'll try to
report on anything
hard-boiled or noirish that might transpire. I hope to find
Terrill
Lankford and Mari Hall while I'm there and introduce myself.
Terrill and I
exchanged a couple of messages a while back.
Kevin: Yep, I know about Denton, Texas but I've never been
there. I've
been in the Texas panhandle but I think Denton is farther
east.
Thank you, Terri Carl, for admitting that you didn't read
Elmore Leonard. I
read Leonard's western many moons ago but hadn't read much of
his mystery
stuff. When he suddenly jumped into the spotlight and got
discovered I read
one of the new books everyone was talking about; can't
remember the title.
I didn't like it, primarily because the villain/antagonist
was let go in the
end. No sense of justice, and believe me, she (yeah, she) had
it coming.
That soured me on Leonard and I haven't read another since.
Yikes, what an
indictment of me. I know I'm probably missing some pretty
good books and no
doubt I'll get around to Leonard again. But the stack of
books is high
enough as it is.
Some time back someone recommended Robert Skinner. I recently
read SKIN
DEEP, BLOOD RED. I enjoyed it immensely and would recommend
it highly. New
Orleans in the forties. Thank you to whomever it was who
recommended this
writer. I hope he continues for a long time.
I'm about 1/3 of the way through THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY and
I don't have a
lot to say about it. Can we find a hard-boiled in which the
protagonist is
not amoral? Just got through the discussion between Tom and
Dickie about
whether Tom is homosexual. I have to say that the name Dickie
is beginning
to turn me off. Maybe more about this book when I finish it.
Or...if.
Cheers,
Frank Denton
