To my knowledge, Highsmith has one "lesbian" novel called
Pillar of
Tears or Tears of Salt or some such, published under a
pseudonym that I
have forgotten in, I think, the early 1950s. The book was
republished
by Naiad Press and includes an introduction by Highsmith in
which she
talks about how well the book sold and the favorable
responses she
received from all manner of readers. Incidentally, the NY
Times
obituary, which was pretty lengthy, missed this aspect of
Highsmith's
life and work.
Plein Soleil (sp?) is the same as Purple Noon. It should be
pretty
widely available now, at least in the US, because it got the
Scorsese
imprimatur and was rereleased in the theaters in the summer
of 1996.
Great stuff.
For those who know all the Ripley novels, I would be curious
to hear
rankings. I read Ripley Underground, which I enjoyed, but
also felt
that it petered out a bit.
