My source says it was originally a play by Patrick Hamilton,
which itself
was inspired by the famous Leopold-Loeb case (later novelized
in
Compulsion). The play was adapted for film by Arthur
Laurents. Know
Strangers on A Train was a Highsmith; not aware of other
Hitchcock films
that might have been adapted from her fiction, but will
check. Perhaps
others know of other titles?
I first read Highsmith because of a film, Wim Wenders'
American Friend,
based on Ripley's Game. Wonderful noir film, and a book that
makes you
wince.
I'll join in on our assigned discussion topic when the book
arrives from
Seattle.
