It's gritty, it doesn't matter that it's about cops and not PIs, it's
not because it doesn't fit a rigid definition, it's because it's a TV
show. Tie it in to fiction (I wonder, does it relate to the 87th
precinct at all? It's been a long time since I read any of those) and
it's germane. I think it's one of the best things on TV, I watch it
every week and have for years, but I'd rather not get into too much
discussion about it without relating it to the subject of the list.

I'm not trying to be a fascist, I'm just saying that the question of
whether "Homicide" gets an Edgar, in and of itself, doesn't have much
to do with hardboiled fiction. But is there a character, in books,
who's close to Frank Pembleton? I'd read them.

On another note, I was looking over the archives and saw there's been
a bit of talk about Lawrence Block. I just picked up a couple of bis
Scudder books, _Eight Million Ways to Die_ and _A Ticket to the
Boneyard_, and they're very good. Most of you already know that,
though. Nice to find a writer you like who's got so many books out.
I e-mailed him at lawbloc@aol.com and got on his newsletter list, too.
