RARA-AVIS: Pulpish presents

Wed, 31 Dec 1997 12:10:37 -0500 Well, people don't give me pulp and hard-boiled books for Christmas, but
they do give me money, and that inevitably ends up in the hands of many
of the DC area's fine book merchants. So here's a list of some of the
Christmas presents I bought for myself, with other people's money:

3 Peter Chambers paperbacks by Henry Kane, including one from the
classic period (_My Business is Murder_ [1954]--doesn't quite have the
same ring as _Murder is my Business_ though, does it?), and two Lancer
originals: _Dead in Bed_ (1961) and _Never Give a Millionaire an Even
Break_ (1963).

2 non-series Henry Kane novels: _My Darlin' Evangeline_ (Dell 1st, 1961)
and _Dirty Gertie_ (Belmont, 1965).

A couple by the other Kane--Frank--including one Johnny Liddell (_Grave
Danger_, 1954) and the non-series _Syndicate Girl_ (Dell, 1965)

A couple of Steve Bently PBO's by Robert Dietrich (thanks to Kevin Smith
for the tip!): _Murder on her Mind_ (Dell 1st Ed., 1960) and _My Body_
(Lancer, 1962)

2 by John Wainwright: _Death of a Big Man_ and _Square Dance_, both from
1975. I already had _The Hard Hit_ by the same author, and they all
sound like winniers. Anybody have anything to say about Wainwright?

A half-dozen of Peter Corris' Cliff Hardy novels, equally early and late
in the series.

_Hard Cash_, the 5th installment in Max Allen Collins' Nolan series (an
imitation of the Parker series, if you don't already know), and
_Quarry's Deal_ (formerly _The Deal_, from Collins' Quarry series, about
a professional hit man).

Some other various things, including _The Plastic Nightmare_ by Richard
Neely (filmed, and republished by Black Lizzard as _Shattered), _The
Wheel is Fixed_ by James M. Fox (Dell, 1951) and _The Wife Next Door_ by
R.V. Cassill (Fawcett Gold Medal, 1959), and _The Things We Do for Love_
by Benjamin Schutz_ (thanks again Kevin), and _Mob Psychology_, no. 87
in the Destroyer series (so sue me).

Finally, I got 2 copies of Ellroy's _My Dark Places_ for $3 each, and
the 2nd printing of his first novel _Brown's Requiem_ in an Avon PBO.
This copy has a long inscription in it, and was a true bargain at $2.75.

That's it for this week. I wonder what next week might bring ;-)
