Santa left the two Library of America Crime Novel volumes of
American
Noir novels under my tree! Yippee!
The first volume is "American Noir Novels of the 1930s &
40s" and
contains:
James M. Cain - The Postman Always Rings Twice
Horace McCoy - They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
Edward Anderson - Thieves Like Us
Kenneth Fearing - The Big Clock
William Lindsay Gresham - Nightmare Alley
Cornell Woolrich - I Married A Dead Man
The only one of these I have read is the Cain, though I have
other
things by Woolrich.
The second volume is "American Noir Noir of the 1950's" and
has:
Jim Thompson - The Killer Inside Me
Patricia Highsmith - The Talented Mr. Ripley
Charles Willeford - Pick Up
David Goodis - Down There
Chester Himes - The Real Cool Killers
I have a feeling I may have read the Highsmith title a long,
long time
ago but I'm not really sure, and I have read other things by
Willeford,
bvut none of the others. Looks like I have some noir to
reading to do!
Kevin Smith mentions Joe Gores's story "File #6". If anyone
has an idea
how I might get my hands on this, even a photocopy, I'd like
to know,
'cause I'd really like to read it.
Here's hoping the New Year brings you all many
biblio-delights!
Rick
