As far as I recall, the titles/authors mentioned by Michael
& James are
not covered specifically in O'Brien's book [btw Michael, just
*how much*
did you pay for that book?].
Lesbian pulps, cover blurbs, Ann Aldrich and Gold Medal are
all
mentioned specifically (albeit briefly) by Sally Munt, in
Chapter Five
of her _Murder by the Book: Feminism and the Crime Novel_
(Routledge:
London & NY, 1994). The notes offer some bibliographical
pointers that
look like they might be right up your boulevard; if you have
trouble
tracking down Munt, mail me and I'll copy you the references.
The
chapter is apparently a revised version of an earlier piece,
so you may
like to check out also: Susannah Radstone, ed., _Sweet
Dreams:
Sexuality, Gender and Popular Fiction_ (Lawrence &
Wishart: London,
1988).
See also Piet Schreuders _The Book of Paperbacks: A Visual
History of
the Paperback Book_ (Virgin: London, 1981) apparently a
reprint of
_Paperbacks USA_ (Loeb: Amsterdam, 1981) [I'm not sure if
this edition
is published in Dutch or English]. As well as providing a
useful
general text, there is a very useful annotated
bibliography.
_Hardboiled America_ is the subject of a rather fine
in-depth
review-essay in the current issue of Crime Time. Check it out
;-)
