Ed--
I know Lou Reed is on record as admiring Chandler, but I
really think
the world presented in his songs has more to do with the brutal
urban
naturalism of Hubert Selby than with the crime-novel tradition.
For all
of my disagreements with Mario T. (I think _Lot_49_ is chock
full of fear
and peril), I'm not sure that _noir_ should embrace everything
that has a
bleak, violent, loveless milieu.
Yours,
Josh Lukin
