I'm still tottering through The Maltese Falcon and enjoying
it. A couple of
questions have occurred to me and where better to ask them.
Why is Dundy so
hostile to Spade? There's no allusion to previous cases where
they might have
crossed swords. It's interesting to watch Tom Polhaus trying
to mediate
between them, and in one case to physically step between
them. It's obvious
that Polhaus likes Spade. I guess I need to go back and see
what the
relationship between Polhaus and Dundy. Is Dundy Polhaus's
superior?
We discussed music a week or so back, but in the chapter in
which Brigid
spends the night with Spade, she comes out of the bedroom
whistling En Cuba.
I'm a pretty old guy but I sure don't remember a song of this
name. And
what's this about a lady whistling? I haven't known many
women who whistle.
Not that there aren't some.
Cheers,
Frank Denton
