I think this plan will work pretty well for the readings. At
least
it'll give you something to pick up when you're wondering
what to read
next, even if you don't plan on saying anything.
Fri 28 November 1997 - up to chapter eleven of _The Maltese
Falcon_
Fri 4 December 1997 - all done _The Maltese Falcon_
Mon 15 December 1997 - _Farewell, My Lovely_ (Raymond
Chandler)
Mon 5 January 1998 - _The Drowning Pool_ (Ross
Macdonald)
This way we have a little time and warning to read the
Chandler, and
then over Christmas while most people aren't following their
e-mail
very closely, we can read the Macdonald and have our say in
the new
year. If there are any serious objections, let me know, but I
think
it's loose enough to be reasonable, and there are no tests.
Next year
we might as well just plough through the other suggested
books.
If you're new to the list, we've been going through some
books and
commenting on them. Any comments are welcome, from small
doctoral
dissertations to "I liked it because [insert resaon]." You're
under
no obligation to do any reading or to say anything if you do
read them.
On another note, I changed the configuration of the lists a
while back
so that only subscribers may post to the list. This was to
catch
spam (I've caught a couple of them already). If you receive
the list
at one address, and post from another, your mail gets bounced
to me
for approval. I've just been sending them along, but I'm
going to
start sending back a canned message in response.
Cheers,
Bill
