As far as I am concerned : yes, you can.
My generation ( just before WW II) grew up - in France and other west
european countries - on american atmosphere : movies, jazz , books, coca
cola, Camel , Cadillac and Chevrolet ...It is not surprising that I love
postwar Jazz.
It was mainly played in night-clubs where it encountered from time to tim=
e
many hardboiled characters. For this reason I think that Jazz suits
perfectly to several films noir.
In addition to the list already given I indicate a few french films noir
that I particularly relished :
- Louis Malle's Ascenceur pour l'=E9chafaud (Miles Davis quintet)
- Jean-luc Godard's A bout de souffle (Martial Solal)
- Roger Vadim's Sait-on jamais? (John Lewis' modern jazz quartet)
- Georges Lautner's Mort d'un pourri (Stan Getz)
- Edouard Molinaro's Des femmes disparaissent ( Art Blakey's Jazz
Messengers)....
and also : Jacques Becker's Touchez pas au grisbi (jean Wiener)-
It's not jazz stricto sensu but the harmonica solo is delicious-
The harmonica player was Jean Wetzel. The tune became a hit played
by Larry Adler.
But I'm old fashioned and it's the opinion of the younger generation that
is attractive.
