Thought I'd pop in and let Vicky know she's not alone here,
gender-wise,
although I am old enough to be her much, much, much older
sister. I
love hard-boiled but don't post often because the combined
knowledge of
the Rara-Avis regulars is awe-inspiring and also a little
intimidating.
I mean, the most intelligent thing I can say about Hammett is
that I
really like his work.
The regular-Joe thread is interesting. I read some amateur
sleuth
series, and enjoy them, but I do think you have to force
yourself to
forget the body count. When I decided to write an amateur
sleuth
series, the thought of having a protagonist who constantly
solved
murders with no good reason for getting involved in them
bothered me
enough that I stepped outside the genre a bit for a valid
explanation of
why Lizbet Lange keeps getting involved in murders. Her first
case will
be out in February and I'm interesting in seeing how people
respond. It
isn't hard-boiled though. And my Z. Smith series, which is
about a
private eye, falls a bit short of hard-boiled, too.
