Second, here's the final tally on the next reading. Sorry I'm
late in
getting this out.
1. _The Maltese Falcon_, Dashiell Hammett
2. _Farewell, My Lovely_, Raymond Chandler
3. _The Drowing Pool_, Ross Macdonald
To save hassle, I figure we might as well go through the
three in
order and then figure out what to do next. I'm not surprised
that
these three won, nor that they came out in the order they
did.
_Falcon_ was leading from the start, with _Farewell_ second,
and while
_Pool_ only had one first-place vote, it picked up as others
got
dropped and second- or third-place votes were used.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority of us own all these books,
so we
don't need a delay while we go buy them. What's a good way
for a list
to do a novel? Have it half-done by a certain date?
About _Falcon_, according to the bibliography, its publishing
history
goes like this:
* "The Maltese Falcon" (Black Mask, September 1929) (Part
one)
* "The Maltese Falcon" (Black Mask, October 1929) (Part
two)
* "The Maltese Falcon" (Black Mask, November 1929) (Part
three)
* "The Maltese Falcon" (Black Mask, December 1929) (Part
four)
* "The Maltese Falcon" (Black Mask, January 1930) (Part
five)
and then it was published all together by Knopf in 1930.
_Farewell_
was published by Knopf in 1940, and _Pool_ by Knopf in
1950.
