I read them in order and am very glad I did - not only do some
elements of the plot and characters continue on from book to book, but
you can see Ellroy's style change into the crazed "bop noir" of _White
Jazz_. Besides, the whole thing builds up into a white-hot frenzy and
you should go at it in the right order.
