I've fallen behind a little, but I'm trying to catch up. I
thought
Sampson's "To Florida" and Vachss's "It's a Hard World" were a
well-matched
pair because here we have two very well-written stories that
don't have a
single likable character to be found in them. I liked the
Vachss story the
better of the two, which surprised me a little because I'm not
a fan of his
Burke novels. The writing in the novels is very good, but the
plots are
very thin, and although it's not very fashionable in these days
of
"character-driven" writing, I'm a plot guy at heart. I don't
see any
reason why you can't have good characters and still have
something happen
in a story. Anyway, I'm moving on to this week's stories.
