>I recently finished James Lee Burke's new novel,
_Cimmarron Rose._ Although
>it might not be in the classic hardboiled style, along
the cozy-hardboiled
>spectrum, it is certainly toward the hardboiled end of
things. Except for
>setting (substitute Texas hill country for Louisiana
bayou), this could be a
>Robichaux novel. A former cop with a tendency for
violence has to come to
>terms with his past. The Robichaux novels are peopled
with cajuns and
>rednecks; _Rose_ is peopled with Mexicans and rednecks.
In spite of my tone,
>I like Burke's novels and his writing. I do think he is
getting a bit
>predictable though. Anybody else out there read
it?
>
I never had the opportunity to read Burke before Cimmarron
Rose, but I
believe this to be one of the best novels I have read this
year. When I
was reading it, I could not help but think, noir lives! noir
lives! The
many little stories that make up this novel are each complex
and
compelling. The characters are tough but believable, and the
dialog is
great. I could not find one thing to criticize within, and
would assume
that this will be on all the best lists next year.
