I just read John Evans' [Howard Browne] Halo for Satan
(1948). I
thought it was pretty great on the whole. Any word on Evans'
other work
(e.g., Halo in Blood)? Evans has a strong sense of a genre
saturated by
cliche and he makes great fun of this. His prose is
wonderfully cute at
times. Here are two sentences when private investigator Paul
Pine
finally gets a much needed drink: "I tilted the glass and
took three
long satisfying gulps. When I brought the glass down again my
inner
self was up off the canvas and flexing a bicep."
Cheers,
Doug Levin
