Am I delurking or decloaking (like a Romulan warbird?)

I forget which novel that paragraph reappeared in, but sometime this
weekend I'll share where Chandler got the concept for it.  It's one of the
chapter openings in the great English novel Tom Jones.  (I'm cleaning up a
14,000 word essay on Ross Macdonald for the Dictionary of Literary
Biography, which must be in the "priority mail" by tomorrow evening, or
I'd do the research now!)

The cloak goes up, and he fades awa...
