Charles Willeford played himself in Cockfighter. Jay Parini
says a teacher needs a persona, just like a writer. He says a
writer makes up a persona for himself, then grows into it. What
if we typecast ourselves. How do we outgrow the roles we have
chosen for ourselves. Victim, martyr, injustice-collector. I
wouldn't cast my worst enemy the way I have cast myself.
